In This Video:
Expanding your awareness is like learning to carry a surfboard—at first, it's clumsy and you bang into things. Instead of shrinking back into familiar thought patterns, the invitation is to become wider. This is done by placing your attention in the center of your chest, the spiritual heart, which is the doorway to what you truly are. By resting here, the division between inside and outside dissolves, revealing the social structures and mental chatter for the illusion they are. This is not a harsh process, but one of 'surrendered ruthlessness'—letting go into the freedom of no mind.
- When your awareness expands, what is the first habit or thought that tries to pull you back into a 'smaller space'?
- What is your direct experience when you rest your attention in the center of your chest for an extended period?
- If you treat every worry as an un-checked assumption, as Rohan suggests, which recurring 'problem' in your life might not actually be true?
TRANSCRIPT
[00:00] So as everyone know the experience of carrying a long stick or maybe a surfboard, or even a pair of scissors, or something in your hand and you tend to bash things with it and knock things with the extra thing you're carrying. Everyone know that? [00:15] That's what it's like when you start expanding your awareness, it goes from this contracted little thought form into maybe your body, then it goes even wider. And it's clumsy for a while you're banging into things, and you make dumb mistakes that you don't normally make because you're carrying something new and wider, much like a stick or a surfboard. When you first, I watch people pick up a surf board it was just bang bang crash was like now, now, I'll carry my boards, you know? [Laughter] [00:41] It's like this, you're carrying something wider and you're used to a certain extension. So your habits have to be to shrink back. Right, because you know, you're banging is clumsy, gets weird, it's unusual. Or you, or, or the other way is you become aware, oh, put more awareness on, I'm wider now and I need to be more aware and wider in my awareness and, and allow that wider space to be what it is and not come back to a smaller space. [01:12] How do you do that? Well, you keep your, your all your awareness on your inner, and you, you, you, you, you, reduce the outside, just to what you need, to get done what you need to get done, and you put all your attention on your inner, center of your heart, your breath, center of your heart. That's better. Just remain there. [01:44] In your physical heart here, your spiritual heart's more here. It's so in the center almost the center of your chest, let's call the center of your chest for simplicity. And keeping your awareness when your inner says you're opening. And remain there. [02:02] Now this isn't for everybody, other people need to be putting their awareness on what's triggering them, what's making them unhappy, what's creating all the, you know, why am I thinking so much? This is, particularly when you, you're going deeper. I'm talking about here and if you want to jump to that now you can do it but if you're going to do, but you're probably not going to be able to maintain it. It's probably not going to make sense and you're just going to imagine and be distracted anyway. So just be real with what's going on for you. [02:26] But having your one eye on the center of your heart, or God, which is the same thing, beingness, center, center of your heart is the doorway to what you are. So if you keep your center, your attention, all your attention on the doorway, that will get wider and wider and wider and wider until there's no separation between not that and that. And you are that. The not that is illusion. No other way to say it. [03:17] And on the awakening ruthlessness and the impeccability you see all of the social structures illusion, all of the rules illusion, all of the laws illusion, all the fabric of social structures, illusion. The monetary system's illusion. Everything. But they are and a lot of just devices to keep things functioning and to stave off chaos, to hold chaos at bay. And we constantly maintain these structures to hold chaos at bay. And awakening is allowing whatever is including any chaos. [04:14] In your physical heart here, your spiritual heart's more here. You're so in the center, almost the center of your chest, just call the center of your chest for simplicity. Having your, your awareness on your inner as you're opening. But we're trained to hold order and comfort, safety and security. [04:44] And a part of a lot of the rules and mechanisms been put in place because then within the humans there's a lot of shadows and a lot of darkness and, and the separation creates a lot of problems. So we have to have lots of laws and rules to manage that. And some laws and rules are just guidelines because you may be uneducated or young in life and you just don't know the simple, simplicity of how to navigate it so there's raw laws, rules, guidelines for that. To help people to, uh, not to cause too much harm. And a lot of them are just simply oppression and mind control. [05:22] But when you are truly in your heart and truly see who you are and you can see it clearly, you don't need any of this. You don't need any of it. You don't need any of it. You don't need anything because everything's actually within you and that becomes obvious. [05:37] Weirdly, or weird at first it's very strange, very weird. And the mind doesn't want to agree with that, that your experiences that, everything is within you, all everything. So you have to let that settle in, that truth settling, and you stay centered in your heart for that, and burn anything that wants to try and disagree with it from the mind. [06:02] And the mantra I used was no doubt, no doubt, no doubt. This is my direct experience. No doubt, no doubt because the mind then, and the world around me was telling me otherwise. No, no, you don't say this, this is not it. You're not good enough, this can't be it, you're delusional. I was just staying in there. And the if my teacher said I was delusional, okay, I'm going to try and hear that, everything else I've locked out. Because delusional people telling me delusional wasn't working. [Laughter] [06:36] And, on the awakening ruthlessness and the uh, impeccability, you see all of the social structures... And a part, a lot of the rules and the mechanisms been put in place is because then within the humans, there's a lot of shadows and a lot of darkness and the separation creates a lot of problems, so we have to have lots of laws and rules to manage that. Just cut out all the chatter, you cut out all this chatter because that's just confection. [07:26] And, and the true guru or the true teacher is your heart center, but first there has to be enough confection and rubbish out of the way for that to be seen and understood. which is the problem with the you need no teacher, you are the teacher, you are the guru, it's all false. The problem with those statements and those things is seem to attract a huge following for those non-teachers. [Laughter] [08:10] Uh paradoxically is that they're not acknowledging that a lot of stuff has to get out of the way for people to see what they are within themselves. I think the evidence is in front of us when we're here, isn't it not? How much stuff's in the way that we don't know is in the way. We know something's wrong, but we don't know what. That's not going away, just by you saying I am my own teacher. [Laughter] It's too sneaky. Because the mechanism trying to fix it is the mechanism causing the problem and it doesn't want to be fixed. He wants to survive. [08:56] It's, it's very hard like that. The price of my life is the suffering of the host and that's fine by me. That's, it's very very dark like that. There's no compassion. It's ruthless. You're not going to be ruthless to need it. You're screwed. Well, a better softer it's not harshness. Just what's true, what's not true, discernment. Surrendered ruthlessness. [10:17] Does that make sense or not? Doesn't have to. And you some of it makes sense. [10:29] Now your ego which appears in thought forms, has no actual concern for your well-being at all. It's concerned is survival. Whatever needs to happen for that to happen is what's going to happen. If that means you're getting too smart for it and you start to out class it, and you start becoming spiritual, and you start developing spiritual, that's fine. It's a spiritual ego now. It's still here. That's good enough for me. As long as I'm still here. [11:02] You know, and the awakening ruthlessness and the impeccability, you see all of the social structures, illusion, all of the rules illusion, all of the laws illusion. You cut out all the chatter, you cut out all this just. And and there'll have all these traps hoping, waiting and hiding for its opportunity to spring them. [11:39] where we have to, if we remain all of our heart into our heart center and it's simplest of simple. It's going to have a very hard time beating us. Surrender is the cure, let go is the cure. Awareness on awareness is the cure, and you don't deviate. And less us to come out to see how this wrote, put together, okay, that's happening, this is happening in this circumstance, okay, let's untangle that and then reduce the onslaught using the mind wisely against the dysfunctional. Ruthlessly. On the point of reason. [12:28] Even the reasonable mind is ultimately false, too. But it's the point you need to get to for the next step, which is actually this way. The price of my life is the suffering of the host and that's fine by me. [13:00] Surrendered ruthlessness. That makes sense, or not? It doesn't have to. Any summary. No. Your ego, which appears in thought forms, has no actual concern for your well-being at all. It's concerned is survival and whatever needs to happen for that to happen is what's going to happen. If that means you're getting too smart for it and you're starting to outclass it, and you start becoming spiritual and you start developing spiritual, that's fine. It's a spiritual ego now. It's still here. That's good enough for me. [14:04] So I just had a conversation with the family member and it was just jumping from one conclusive statement causing worry to another, unchecked. Oh, worry every year. This is going to happen with this next door and the fires. Well, no, it won't happen because the trees are too tall and the fire will go under it and if they do burn, they'll be too high. She's, oh really? I've been worrying about this every year for years, and a simple little bit of investigation how fires work, that worry didn't need to be there. [14:34] This is what I'm saying. There's no reason, people just want to, the ego just want you to worry and struggle and it doesn't want to check what's true and what's not. And you, if you've got a few hundred of these, that's your life. Just looping through different problems that aren't even problems, they don't exist. It's not true. And we, we've headed more towards reasons, so let's use that trained platform as a launch pad. [15:16] and and and you know, this is someone who is very deep by the way. But what happened if he had died? What happens? The same thing that happened to the person that died 10,000 years ago. Nothing, nothing happened. Because it's all the one thing dancing. And whether this things, this flame appears in the fire or not, it doesn't matter, whether it goes up and comes down, it doesn't matter. [16:11] So even though statement, okay, what if you stopped eating, stop doing anything, and you died? What happened? It's the same thing. I'll do it. I'll just generally retreat and later she'll grow out of spirituality and I'll get it when she's old. and and there'll have all these traps hoping, waiting and hiding for its opportunity to spring them. [16:40] Where we have to, if we remain all of our heart into our heart center, and as simple as simple, it's going to have a very hard time beating us. Surrender is the cure. Let go is the cure. Awareness on awareness is the cure and you don't deviate. And then less us to come out to see how is this, uh, put together. Okay, that's happening, this is happening in this circumstance, okay. I'm untangling that and then reduce the onslaught using the mind wisely against the dysfunctional, ruthlessly. [17:19] on the point of reason. People are trying to fill their mind with good stories to share with the next person to keep each other interactive and popular. Some of this is for financial resources. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm not saying that. But if we believe it, then we go along with all the bullshit, right? We do need money. We need income. It's just because that's nowhere around it as far as existing here. But even state that, okay. What if you stopped eating, stopped doing anything and you died? What happened? [17:50] What's aware of that? Nothing. Nothing has happened. So it's only a problem with mind. So what sort of freedom would that allow if you, if you disproved that all was important and required? What would that mean? And that playfulness might be purely interior and just nothing on the outside. [18:50] Because that is, the, the unfettered spaciousness. And you think you're a separate entity here having an experience or you understand that your body itself experiencing itself, what's aware of that? And that will all just happen as it happens. No one controlling it, no one steering it. [20:10] So even the idea that we need money, because, and even that's ultimately not true. We only need it as a physical being here. It doesn't matter. If all of humanity just imploded at once, zero sorrow or pain. There aren't any here, are there? That's all created from within, as well. It's just from mind. No mind, no problem. [21:11] But let's even stretch that, okay. What if you stopped eating and stopped doing any and then you died, what happened? What happened? It's the same thing. But neuroticism, let's use our neuroticism and just reduce that neuroticism to see clearly to launch into the infinite. [21:41] And that playfulness might be purely interior and just nothing on the outside. Just simplicity, because there's nothing holding back playfulness anymore. Not that you have to be or need to be. You can just do nothing and sit. Because, it's natural, and you believe you were separate entity, here having an experience. Or you understand that you're body itself experiencing itself. What is aware of that? [22:23] There's always. What's aware of that? What's aware of the seeing? It doesn't require eyes or ears or nose or taste. And then you can be more playful. Because there's nothing holding back playfulness anymore. Your forcefulness, your desires, your aversions, these tensions, they are not spaciousness. Silence knowing is the total extra color. [23:11] So you don't believe. Look, see yourselves. What's before all this, what's beyond all this? So we we, we've headed more towards reason, so let's use that trained platform as a launch pad. because that is the, the unfettered spaciousness. And it, it, it's, it's seeing through this vehicle here, or it's not. But it's seeing through every vehicle whether you realize it or not the birds, the bees, they're everywhere. [23:54] And you believe you're a separate entity here, having an experience, or you understand that your body itself experiencing itself. So the state of no mind and see if this is true or not. You can check for yourself. I can tell you, it's freedom. [24:30] Because that is this, the unfettered spaciousness. And it's, it, it's, it's seeing through this vehicle here. Or it's not. It's seeing through every vehicle. Whether you realize it or not, the birds, the bees, they're everywhere. And you believe you were a separate entity here having an experience. Or you understand that your body itself experiencing itself. What's aware of the seeing? Because that is this, the spaciousness. [25:11] So, even the idea that we need money, cause, and even that's ultimately not true. We only need it as a physical being here. It doesn't matter. No mind. No problem. So why don't we enter the state of no mind and see if this is true or not? You can check for yourself. Seeing yourself. [25:51] Nothing to hold onto, nothing to grieve over, this is. I mean, you know, this is someone who is very deep by the way. Oneness, unity, whatever the labels are, they don't matter. You have to throw these out also. What's before all this, what's beyond all this? That you are. [26:40] And then you can be more playful because there's nothing holding back playfulness anymore. Your forcefulness, your desires, your aversions, these tensions, they're not spaciousness. The experience of the planets, everything. Seeing through it all. It is easy. Silent knowing is a total extra color. [27:18] And the seeing, you may think awareness, what I'm seeing, no, what's aware of that awareness? That doesn't require eyes or ears or nose or taste. What's aware of that. Nothing stopping you. What's aware of seeing. It does it, doesn't require eyes or ears.
GLOSSARY
-
Spiritual Heart
The energetic center of the chest, used as a practical focal point for awareness. It's not the physical organ but the 'doorway' to your true nature, a place to rest attention and stabilize. -
Surrendered Ruthlessness
This isn't harshness, but an impeccable discernment that sees what is true and what is not, without compromise. It's clarity aligned with letting go, not with the ego's force. -
No Mind
A state of consciousness free from the constant stream of thought and commentary. It's not a blank state, but the direct experience of silent, spacious awareness where 'problems' cease to exist. -
Confection
Rohan's term for the unnecessary mental and social chatter that clutters the inner space. It's the 'rubbish' that must be cleared away to hear the guidance of the true teacher—the heart. -
The Doorway
A metaphor for the Spiritual Heart. By keeping attention on this inner center, the space 'widens' until the separation between you and the 'outside' world dissolves into Oneness.
Q&A
-
Why does expanding my awareness feel clumsy or awkward?
Rohan explains it's like carrying a long surfboard for the first time. Your mind's habits are accustomed to a smaller, contracted space. As awareness widens to include the body and beyond, it takes time to adjust, and you might make uncharacteristic mistakes. -
What is the practice for stabilizing in expanded awareness?
The core practice is to keep your attention on your inner self, specifically the center of your chest or 'spiritual heart'. Reduce focus on the external world to only what's necessary. This acts as an anchor and a doorway to a wider, more stable presence. -
What does 'no mind, no problem' mean in practice?
This points to the direct experience that suffering and problems are created by the thinking mind. When you enter a state of 'no mind'—or pure, silent awareness—the problems generated by thought dissolve, revealing an inherent freedom that was always present. -
How can I deal with doubt when my spiritual experience contradicts what others say?
Rohan suggests using the mantra 'no doubt, no doubt, no doubt' to honor your direct experience. The mind and the world may tell you you're delusional, but staying centered in the heart and trusting what is directly perceived is key to stabilizing your seeing.
