In This Video:
Your mind constantly travels into a future that doesn't exist, creating fears about things that aren't actually happening. This is a dream state. The past is also a dream. By simply taking care of this present moment—the 'now'—the future handles itself. True living is found only here, and it's where the suffering we call anxiety comes to an end. It is as simple as relaxing and staying home in what you are.
- When you feel anxiety, can you pause and ask: what is the actual problem, right here, in this exact moment?
- If you constantly live in a future that never arrives, when do you ever actually live?
- Notice the mind's tendency to dream of a better future or a regretted past. What happens when you simply relax and 'stay home' in the now?
TRANSCRIPT
[00:05] Future and past are dreams. [00:13] It just kind of hit me the other day that a lot of my fears, you know, pretty much all my fears are just future fear, things that aren't happening. [00:26] That's called anxiety. [00:42] Now, now, now. [00:51] If you take care of your nows, the future gets taken care of. Do you understand that? [01:26] Your mind's just a time machine, dreaming. So if you're all future-oriented, when you get to that future point, you'll just be thinking of the future and the next problem, and just be living there again, and that'll be perpetual till death. And then you never even lived. [01:58] There can even be pretty dreams and fantastical dreams and success dreams. They're still dreams. You're still not here. [02:44] That's nothing I'm making up. It's just how it is. That's known by anyone that doesn't need meditation work or deep work. It becomes obvious. [03:05] You're here now. What's the problem right now? [03:11] That easy. Life's so easy if you just stay there. [03:47] The power of now. If you can just stop and see it instead of thinking about problems or worrying or dreaming of a cruise or whatever it is. The here is just good enough. [04:06] The ending of suffering, experiencing now. Relax. Stop living. Stay home.
GLOSSARY
-
The Time Machine
The mind's habitual mechanism of projecting into the past or future, creating 'dreams' that prevent you from living in the present reality. It is the engine of most anxiety. -
Future Fear
A form of anxiety based on imagined events that are not currently happening. This is a dream state, a primary function of 'The Time Machine' mind. -
The Now
The only reality that exists—this immediate, present moment. It's the Zen concept of 'being here now,' where taking care of the present moment naturally resolves the future. -
Dreams (Mental)
Any thought about the past or future. This includes worries, fears, fantasies, and plans. These mental projections keep you from experiencing life directly. -
Stay Home
A simple instruction to rest in present moment awareness, without letting the mind wander into past or future 'dreams'. It is the direct path to ending suffering.
Q&A
-
What does it mean that the mind is a 'time machine'?
It means the mind habitually projects into the past and future, creating 'dreams' of what was or what might be. This mental time travel is the source of most anxiety because it pulls you out of the only reality that exists: the present moment. -
How can I stop worrying about the future?
You stop worrying by returning to 'the now'. When you notice fear, ask yourself, "What is the problem, right now?" You will often find there is no immediate problem. By taking care of each present moment, the future naturally takes care of itself. -
What is 'future fear'?
'Future fear' is what we commonly call anxiety. It's the suffering caused by imagining negative events that are not actually happening. It's a dream. Recognising this allows you to drop the fear and relax into the reality of the present. -
Does being present mean I should never plan for the future?
It's not about abandoning practical planning. It's about not living in the mind's fantasy of the future. You can plan what's needed without emotionally investing in it as if it's real. Once the plan is made, you return your attention to 'the now'.
