But why attend a Buddhist Retreat!? Rohan’s 1st…

A retreat isn't an escape, but a direct encounter with 'beingness.' Rohan explains why immersing yourself in a silent retreat is a powerful tool for self-realisation and provides the incentive to continue the work of looking inward.

But why attend a Buddhist Retreat!? Rohan’s 1st…

In This Video:

A retreat is not a holiday from life; it is a deep-dive into what you are before the noise of the mind begins. It provides a rare opportunity to suspend your daily patterns and investigate your true nature directly. By immersing yourself in a field of presence with a teacher, you create the conditions for rapid insight and establish a powerful incentive to continue the work of self-realisation when you return to your world.

  • If all your daily distractions were removed for seven days, what do you suspect would be the first thing to surface?
  • Have you ever felt a palpable sense of peace from another person? What if that field is not personal, but is your own nature being reflected back to you?
  • What is the one pattern you keep running that you know would be impossible to maintain in a silent retreat environment?

TRANSCRIPT

[00:00] In this satsang, attended live and online, self-realised teacher Rohan Matus explains why a retreat is an opportunity to deep-dive into beingness, who you really are - and an invitation and incentive to continue the work. [00:10] Satsang means “Meeting In The Non-Dual Truth of Reality.” [00:20] It is being in the presence of an enlightened teacher and experiencing their peaceful energy to discover our true, non-dual nature. Uncovering the deep beauty within us via higher consciousness and transcending the seperate idea of "I" or "me". [00:30] Many techniques are used such as Meditation, Self Inquiry, Inner Investigation, Movement and most importantly, being in the presence & wisdom of an Enlightened Being. [00:40] True enlightenment can't be fully explained with words. Rohan's sharings come from "his" direct ongoing Enlightenment experience, proven teachings, and what he's learned from other enlightened masters. [00:50] Note that authentic enlightened teachers have an energetic light about them that can be directly experienced. If a teacher doesn't have this, they might not be the real deal and CAN NOT "take you home".

GLOSSARY

  • Satsang
Literally, "meeting in truth." It is the direct transmission that occurs in the presence of a self-realised teacher, where the silent field itself does much of the teaching, bypassing the conceptual mind.
  • Beingness
The raw, unconditioned sense of existence before it is qualified by thought or identity. It is the simple feeling of 'I Am' without any story attached to it. This is what a retreat helps you stabilise in.
  • Non-Duality
The direct recognition that reality is a single, undivided whole. The perception of a separate 'me' inside a body looking out at a separate world is seen to be an illusion created by thought.
  • Self-Inquiry
A meditative investigation, popularised by Ramana Maharshi, that uses the question 'Who am I?' to trace the sense of 'I' back to its source, revealing the substratum of awareness.
  • Enlightened Teacher
Someone who has stabilised in the direct realisation of their true nature as unconditional consciousness. Their primary function is to act as a mirror, reflecting your own inherent freedom back to you.

Q&A

  • Why should I attend a spiritual retreat?
A spiritual retreat is an opportunity to deep-dive into 'beingness' and discover who you really are, away from the distractions of daily life. It serves as both an invitation and a powerful incentive to continue your inner work.
  • What is Satsang?
Satsang means 'Meeting in the Non-Dual Truth of Reality.' It is the practice of being in the presence of a self-realised teacher, where their peaceful energy helps you to directly discover your own true, non-dual nature.
  • What techniques are used during a retreat?
Common practices include Meditation, Self-Inquiry, and Inner Investigation. However, the most vital element is not a technique but being in the presence and shared wisdom of an Enlightened Being, which accelerates insight.
  • Can enlightenment be learned from books or words?
No. True enlightenment cannot be fully explained with words as it is a direct, ongoing experience. Teachings and words can only point towards the truth; they are not the truth itself. The realisation must be experienced directly.

“There’s nothing to add. What you are is prior to beliefs, thoughts and labels.
Here we explore and unveil the ultimate mystery of non-dual being.
Reality.”
