All Of Our Problems Started Here

Our problems begin the moment we create a 'somebody' to defend. This persona, or mask, is driven by fear. This teaching points to a simple reversal—back to the childlike innocence that exists prior to the act. End the mask, end the problem.

All Of Our Problems Started Here

In This Video:

All our problems start with the first separation, the creation of a 'somebody' that needs defending. This creates the persona, a mask we wear that is born from fear—fear of being alone, of being judged, of not surviving. This isn't who you are. The way back is a simple reversal to the innocence you knew as a child, before the invasion of the mask. By seeing the show for what it is, you can end the performance and rest in the freedom of your true nature.

  • In which situations today did you notice yourself putting on a 'mask'? What fear was that mask trying to protect?
  • Can you remember the feeling of being a small child, simply soaking up the world without a need to perform? What does that feel like in your body now?
  • If you were to drop the main role you play for just one hour, what would remain? What is here prior to the performance?

TRANSCRIPT

[00:01:45] Everywhere he went, all he could see was phantoms. Everyone he met was putting on a show, putting on a mask. Persona means mask. It's something that's been taken personally. [00:01:45] The mask is afraid. The mask is defending itself. It's nothing to do with what you are. It's an invasion. You want to end the invasion, right? You want to be free. You don't want the phantom using you as a host. [00:01:45] For the invasion of the mask, the phantom... Oh, here comes somebody I need to do business with, new mask. Oh, here comes Mum, different mask. Oh, here comes the kids, different mask. People swap characters all day and assume they are all real. [00:01:45] Which one are you? You cannot be all of them. All that fear in you is your slave master; that is where personality comes from. The first separation was the problem. First there had to be a 'somebody', then its defence. [00:01:45] When you're a little child, you didn't have that separation. You were just innocent, you were soaking everything up like a sponge. How simple was it? Reverse back to where you came from. [00:01:45] You never were anybody to begin with. End the mask, end the problem. Simply see the show for what it is, and the acting stops by itself. You find what you are before the Great Pretender took the stage.

GLOSSARY

  • Persona
The mask taken personally. A collection of fear-based roles and behaviours we perform for survival and social acceptance. This is not what you are, but a defensive mechanism.
  • The Mask
The specific character or 'phantom' we put on in different situations—for work, family, or friends. It's a show we perform, often unconsciously, to manage how we are perceived.
  • The First Separation
The root of suffering. It's the initial moment the belief in a separate 'me' arises, which then requires a lifetime of defence through the creation of personas.
  • Innocence
The natural state of a small child before the persona develops. It's an open, simple, and direct way of being, soaking everything up without the filter of a separate self.
  • Reverse Back
A pointer, similar to that of Ramana Maharshi, encouraging you to return your attention to the source. To go back to that childlike simplicity before the identity and its problems began.

Q&A

  • What is the 'persona' or 'mask' in a spiritual context?
In a spiritual context, the persona is the collection of roles and behaviours we perform out of fear. It's the 'mask' we wear for survival and social acceptance, which defends the illusory idea of a separate 'me'. It's not what you are, but a conditioned performance.
  • Where does our personality or persona come from?
According to this teaching, the persona arises from fear. It begins with the 'first separation'—the belief in a separate self. This 'somebody' needs to be defended, so fear creates a personality and a series of masks to navigate the world and protect this fragile identity.
  • How can I stop wearing a mask and be more authentic?
The path to authenticity is a 'reversal' back to your original nature. It's not about fighting the mask, but seeing it clearly. By observing when and why you perform, you weaken its automatic control. The teaching points to returning to a childlike innocence, a simple presence that existed before the need for a mask arose.
