The statement is true; there is nothing to do.
For somebody seeking truth, this is a double edged sword statement.
One side of the sword will cut through everything. If used properly, everything will stay in perspective. When things are going wrong, and just as importantly when they are going right. Really there’s just happening, in the now. One side of the sword can cut through any mental fabrication going on around the seeker, or any mental fabrications they are creating, any feelings that are arising, emotions that may be trapped at that moment. If remembered, it can cut through these. It’s wonderful. It’s a wonderful teaching.
The back side of the sword, or the other side, is that it can be used as an excuse, a trap. Particularly in the West, where we’re very interested and trained from birth for quick fixes. So for many seekers, it’s a deadly trap. By reading a few books on spirituality and ways, and starting to find an idea of what truth is, and what they are, they can then find the teaching: “ah, there’s nothing to do.”
How convenient, says the mind. I don’t have to do anymore. There are no rocks to look under, to see what’s hiding within me. There is no one to help, there is no one to serve, there is no one to be kind to, there’s just nothing to do. So glad I found this teaching. My karma must be wonderful to have found this so early.
The truth is, this teaching is for those that have done the work, not for those beginning the work. A person trapped in the “nothing to do” scenario would laugh at that last comment I just made, or discount it, because they are trapped. They have not seen deep enough. Our mind is one of the most complex things imaginable, and it is imaginable, it is imagination. It will agree with itself on so many subjects to keep itself ticking along. The problem with “there’s nothing to do” for somebody that hasn’t done the work of exploring themselves, and knowing themselves - knowing thyself - the mind is running the statement and the mind is running their “nothing to do”. It is not Beingness. They may be lucky enough to have a mind awakening for a period, but eventually, when poked and prodded by life enough, the Beingness will drop away. Because, if we haven’t removed the programming within us that we’ve been given from birth, by our culture, our family, our friends, this will eventually topple us. There is no foundation. A true seeker, for lack of a better word, has a foundation that their understanding of “there’s nothing to do” rests upon.
It is not like a spinning top. From this foundation “nothing to do” or “there is nothing” is stabilized, and that stabilization or foundation is from the removal process of exploring thyself, so that thyself, or I, does not come along at a later date, and take control again - which is so common for seekers that did not have a foundation.
There are no shortcuts. If there were shortcuts there would be thousands or millions more awakened masters on the planet now. The mind itself is programmed to survive at almost all costs. This is the importance of the living guru. It is not possible, almost impossible, extremely rare to find awakening without the help of somebody that is already there. Don’t think you are going to step in front of somebody and they are going to give you an awakening. It does not work that way. It’s a removal process. But you need to know what to remove. And, if it’s not in your consciousness, it’s in your unconsciousness. A teacher will see the hole in your back.
If you’re a genuine seeker, find a true teacher.
Don’t waste a moment.
In this existence, time is extremely valuable.
Don’t waste time.
