Don Juan Matus speaks of 'phantoms'—the thin personas or masks people wear that are driven by fear. After my own Direct Realisation, I encountered these same patterns. The phantoms around me seemed to have all the answers and knew exactly how I was wrong. This difficult Toltec teaching is not an idea; it's a map that prepares you to navigate the reactions of the identified world by staying heart-centred. It helps you deepen under pressure rather than collapse, seeing the masks without becoming entangled in their drama.
- Can you recall a time when someone's confident advice felt more like a projection than genuine wisdom? What was that like?
- What is the 'mask' you wear for survival in the marketplace, and what is the cost of wearing it?
- When your direct experience is rejected by others, is your first impulse to doubt yourself or to stand firm in what you know to be true?
TRANSCRIPT
[00:00:05] In the book 'Journey to Ixtlan', the Toltec Shaman Don Juan Matus tells Carlos Castaneda about his experience after his own realisation, as he moved through the world. [00:00:12] This was very similar to an experience I had. The 'phantoms' around me all seemed to have the answers, to know what was best, and to see how wrong I was in my own direct experience. [00:00:20] For some, this way of seeing continues to this day. Such is the depth of ignorance faced by teachers of direct truth. A set mind is a closed mind. [00:00:28] This reactionary pattern from those in the 'marketplace' is a normal response to someone 'dropping in'. The emotional and fear bodies are the phantom. [00:00:35] Don Juan had warned that this happens when you drop deep into being. Be warned. [00:00:41] In the worst cases, the phantom or parasite—as a group or an individual—can cost the Awakened their lives. Jesus, Socrates, and Osho are great examples of this. [00:00:48] This difficult Toltec teaching prepared me for that experience, so I could continue to surrender deeper into the discovery of Self and stay heart-centre focused, despite the malicious manoeuvres playing out. [00:00:56] I also saw clearly that everyone identified was a phantom, as I had been. A thin persona—from the Greek word for 'mask'—who had left their authentic self behind for a survival-based existence.
GLOSSARY
-
Phantom
The Toltec term for the thin persona or 'mask' people wear. It is the emotional and fear-based body that operates from a place of identification, often reacting to those who embody Direct Truth. -
Identified Beings
Individuals who are completely fused with their thoughts, emotions, and persona. They operate from the 'phantom' and have left their authentic, non-dual nature behind for a survival-based existence. -
Dropping In
The state of resting in deep presence or being, prior to the thinking mind. This shift can trigger reactionary patterns from the 'phantoms' in the marketplace. -
Heart Centre Focused
A state of abiding in the love and stability of one's true nature. It is the practical antidote to the malicious or unconscious manoeuvres of the phantoms. -
The Marketplace
A term for general society or the collective consciousness, where identified beings and their phantoms interact. It is the testing ground for one's ability to remain in presence. -
Direct Experience
The unmediated, first-hand knowing of reality, prior to intellectual concepts or beliefs. This is often challenged by the 'phantoms' who claim to know better.
Q&A
-
What did Don Juan Matus mean by 'phantoms'?
In the Toltec teachings shared by Don Juan, 'phantoms' are the thin personas or masks that people wear. They are not solid identities but are constructs driven by the emotional and fear bodies, causing people to operate from a place of survival rather than authentic being. -
Why do people react negatively after someone has a spiritual awakening?
When someone 'drops in' to a state of deep being, their authentic presence can unconsciously challenge the fear-based personas, or 'phantoms', of those around them. This triggers a reactionary pattern, as the phantom's survival-based existence is threatened by direct truth. -
How does Toltec wisdom help you deal with negativity from others?
The Toltec teachings on phantoms act as a preparation. By understanding that these reactions are not personal attacks but the unconscious manoeuvres of identified personas, you can remain heart-centre focused, deepen your surrender, and even use the pressure to go deeper into Self. -
Is it dangerous to be around 'phantoms' after awakening?
Don Juan warns that it can be. In extreme cases, the collective actions of phantoms or parasites can be malicious and have historically cost awakened beings their lives. The teaching serves as a warning to be aware and remain centred, rather than naive about these dynamics.
