Enlightenment (Non-Dual) vs Religion

Why are we trained to look for God outside ourselves? This teaching unpacks the difference between outward religion, designed for social control, and the inward path of Direct Realisation. Discover the freedom in seeing you are not your thoughts, but the awareness behind them.

Enlightenment (Non-Dual) vs Religion

In This Video:

Most religious structures are built for outwardness; they are social systems designed to manage people. But Direct Realisation is an inward art. It's the process of deconstructing who you are not, as the Buddha pointed to with 'not this, not that,' until only the awareness you've always been remains. This is the discovery of the 'God-Self'—not as an external being to be worshipped, but as the very fabric of your own presence. True transformation isn't found in intellectual knowledge, but in the silent, inward seeing of what is.

  • You have been trained since birth for 'outwardness' — to look for safety, approval, and God outside of yourself. Where do you feel this pull most strongly in your life right now?
  • The Buddha's method of negation is 'not this, not that'. If you were to apply this to your identity right now, what is the first label or story that you know you are not?
  • You can understand quantum physics intellectually, but it won't transform you. Where are you substituting knowledge for direct, felt experience of what you are?

TRANSCRIPT

[00:00:00] We're trained from birth for outwardness, yeah. [00:00:00] It's not inner work. [00:00:00] It's all about the outer and survival. [00:00:00] It's my job to climb up to him or her. [00:00:00] It's still outside. [00:00:00] The Buddha always talked in nots, not this, not that. [00:00:00] You're not this, you're not that, until there's nothing left. [00:00:00] The awareness is what you are. [00:00:00] So it's inward, inward, inward, and you discover God self. [00:00:00] Because there's a light you discover the light. [00:00:00] All will be revealed, all will be revealed. [00:00:00] It's always been God self. [00:00:00] You're going to war for God. [00:00:00] I am that too.

GLOSSARY

  • Outwardness
The conditioned human tendency to focus on external survival, social structures, and authority. It's the default state that Inward Engineering seeks to rebalance by turning attention within.
  • Inward Path
The turn from seeking answers externally (in religion, science, or other people) to discovering truth through direct observation of one's own consciousness. It's the core of non-dual realisation.
  • Negation (Neti Neti)
A method of Self-Inquiry, famously used by the Buddha, of systematically seeing 'not this, not that.' By discarding all that is not you (thoughts, body, roles), what remains is pure awareness.
  • God-Self
The recognition that the divine is not an external entity but the very substratum of your own being. This is the culmination of the inward path, the realisation known in Advaita as 'I Am That'.
  • Shakti
The raw, animating pulse of life itself. It is the living, vibrant energy that can be directly felt but not fully explained by the mind or science. The creative power of consciousness.

Q&A

  • What is the main difference between religion and enlightenment?
Religion is often an outward system focused on belief in an external God, serving social and political structures. Enlightenment, or Direct Realisation, is an inward path of discovery. It's not about belief, but about directly seeing that you are the awareness in which all thoughts, including those about God, appear.
  • What is the 'not this, not that' method in Buddhism?
It is a practice of negation, or 'Neti Neti' in Sanskrit. You look at any object, thought, or identity—your body, your job, your story—and recognise, 'I am not this.' By systematically discarding what you are not, the mind quiets, revealing the unchanging awareness that you actually are.
  • Why doesn't intellectual knowledge lead to spiritual awakening?
Intellectual understanding, even of complex physics, remains a concept in the mind. It is another object for awareness to observe. Awakening is not the acquisition of new knowledge but the dissolution of the 'knower.' It is a direct, felt shift in identity from the person to the presence observing the person.

“There’s nothing to add. What you are is prior to beliefs, thoughts and labels.
Here we explore and unveil the ultimate mystery of non-dual being.
