Many seekers get caught chasing 'spiritual candy'—quick hits of information that feel good but only strengthen the ego. This talk cuts through that distraction, pointing directly to the one substance of reality. We look at how the idea of a separate 'I' feeds unkind energies, a concept explored in Toltec wisdom, and how dismantling this illusion allows you to rest in the simplicity of what you truly are before thought.
- Where in your own search do you notice yourself reaching for 'spiritual candy' instead of sitting with what is?
- The teaching says unchecked thoughts and emotions become 'food' for other energies. Can you directly observe this process in your own experience without judgment?
- If you were to stop taking yourself so seriously, as the teaching suggests, what would be the first story about 'you' that would have to fall away?

[00:00:04] Spiritual candy. It's just quick rewards, isn't it? Just like sugar. [00:00:16] You become an addict to the sugar. You have to keep finding more and more and it gets more and more radical. Before you know it you're absolutely lost. [00:00:32] All these teachings of reality are meant to come out into complexity to bring us back into simplicity, and seeing what we are. [00:00:53] It's all one substance. The sound, the seeing, the taste, the touch, the hearing. It's not multiple. [00:01:34] There is not form separate from the unformed. It's the active part of the unformed. It's not separate. All of this is within the unformed. [00:02:24] In the Toltec tradition, they explain that unchecked thoughts and emotions become food. You release energy and you feed other beings or energies. I did it, so can you. I dismantled my castle of identity. [00:04:12] There are no others. The enemy is within. You have to stop feeding dark energies. [00:05:52] Understand Tamas Energy. This is the dull, lethargic energy created by human thought. Stop being food for these forces. [00:10:24] The double-slit experiment shows that observation turns waves into particles. As the observer, we're congealing and condensing the light form into form. So stop taking yourself so seriously because you don't exist separately. You're not running any of it. Just be.
GLOSSARY
-
Spiritual Candy
The ego's addiction to quick spiritual rewards, concepts, and identities that provide a temporary high but prevent Direct Realisation. It is a subtle form of spiritual bypassing. -
One Substance
The Non-Dual understanding that all of reality—seeing, hearing, form, and thought—is a manifestation of a single, unformed substratum. There are no truly separate things. -
Tamas Energy
Drawing from Vedic and Toltec wisdom, this is the dull, heavy, or chaotic energy generated by unchecked human thought and emotional loops, which can feed unkind forces. -
The Unformed
The source reality or substratum prior to its manifestation as form. In Advaita, this points to Brahman; in Toltec wisdom, it is the Nagual or the unknowable. -
Ego Castle
A metaphor for the fortified structure of identity, beliefs, and memories that the ego builds to maintain a sense of a separate self. Direct practice involves dismantling this structure.
Q&A
-
What does 'spiritual candy' mean?
Spiritual candy refers to quick, addictive spiritual concepts or experiences that provide a temporary sense of insight or specialness but ultimately distract from genuine self-realisation. It feeds the ego's desire for identity rather than helping to dissolve it. -
How does the ego use spirituality to stay in control?
The ego co-opts spiritual ideas to build a new, 'spiritual' identity. It creates a 'castle of identity' from concepts like being a starseed or having secret knowledge. This reinforces separation instead of revealing the one substance of reality. -
What is 'Tamas Energy' in the Toltec tradition?
In this context, Tamas is the dull, chaotic energy generated by unchecked human thoughts and emotions. The Toltec wisdom suggests this energy doesn't just dissipate; it becomes 'food' for other non-physical energies, keeping you in a loop of suffering. -
What does it mean that there is only 'one substance'?
This points to the non-dual truth that everything—sound, sight, thought, and form—arises from a single, unformed reality. The appearance of separate objects and a separate 'you' is an illusion created by the mind's observation and identification.
