TIME is of the HUMAN MIND // ENLIGHTENMENT Understandings

Time isn't real; it's a story the mind tells. Most people live in a fantasy of past memories and future anxieties. This teaching shows how to break that spell by returning to 'the now'—the only place where peace and your true nature can be found. It is time to tame the mind.

TIME is of the HUMAN MIND // ENLIGHTENMENT Understandings

In This Video:

The only thing that truly exists is now. Time is a construction of the human mind, a map we use to understand a past that is just a distorted memory and a future that is pure projection. If you spend your life living in this fantasy, you are likely operating from fear. The present moment—the now—is innocent, fresh, and real. It is the only point of access you have to the heart, which is the doorway to the vastness of what you truly are.

  • If time is just a mental construct, what are you experiencing right now, before the mind labels it?
  • Listen to the voice of your inner commentator. Does it speak to you more harshly than your worst enemy? What happens if you just watch it without believing its stories?
  • The teaching says 'Now is innocent'. Can you feel the freshness of this moment, before any story from the past or projection about the future is laid upon it?

TRANSCRIPT

[00:00] The only thing that actually exists is now. Time is of the human mind. We have evidence of a previous now in the fossils and in the buildings and in the streets, but really there's only ever now. Everything else is a memory or a projection. [00:22] A memory is a projection, and everything we try to remember is going to have a slight distortion in it. They'll find a fossil and argue about it. It's all, 'this is what we think happened, this is what we think went on.' [00:47] The future... really, we have no idea. So all you really have is right now. Right now is this room and what you can see outside of this room. What you experience, what thoughts may be coming by, what sensations may be coming by. [01:10] And then if you pay close attention, behind that is something much faster and deeper, only accessible now. Not accessible in the past, in the future. So if you're spending all your time in the past and the future, well, good luck with that. [01:29] You're living in a fantasy world, and it's often rooted in fear. [01:44] Now is innocent. Now is fresh. It's alive. It's real. And this is the doorway to the heart. The heart's the doorway to the vastness of what you are. [02:02] The mind... if you think your mind's your friend, you haven't gone deep enough yet. You haven't noticed that it talks to you more harshly than even your worst friend, and even perhaps your enemy. [02:29] They haven't noticed that it might be wise to start noticing it so you can get some distance, if you don't want to be carrying your worst enemy in your pocket everywhere you go. [02:43] You need to tame it. Let it go. Let it go. Ignore its anxieties. Let it go by. Stay here, and in the awareness and watching, you're here now.

GLOSSARY

  • The Now
The direct experience of the present moment. In this teaching, it is considered the only reality that actually exists, free from the distortions of past memory or future projection. It's the doorway to the Heart.
  • Memory as Projection
The understanding that memories are not perfect recordings of the past but are mental reconstructions. They are always filtered and slightly distorted by the mind, making them an unreliable source of reality.
  • Fantasy World
A state of consciousness where one's attention is predominantly lost in thoughts about the past or future. This mental activity is seen as a fantasy because it is not based in the direct reality of 'The Now'.
  • Taming the Mind
The practice of observing anxious or critical thoughts without identifying with them. It's not about stopping thought but creating enough inner distance to 'let it go' and return to the awareness of the present moment.
  • Doorway to the Heart
A metaphor for how the present moment ('The Now') serves as the single point of entry to a deeper, vaster dimension of Being. This is a state of direct realisation beyond the conceptual mind.

Q&A

  • What does it mean that time is a construct of the mind?
It means that our experience of past, present, and future is a function of human thought, not an absolute reality. The only thing that ever truly exists is the immediate present moment, 'the now'. The past is a memory, and the future is a projection, both of which are mental activities.
  • Why are memories considered 'projections' in this teaching?
Memories are called projections because they are not perfect, objective recordings of past events. They are reconstructions filtered through our current state of mind and always contain slight distortions. Like projecting a film, we are re-creating an image of the past, not experiencing the past itself.
  • How can I stop living in the past or future?
The practice is not to stop thinking, but to 'tame the mind'. This involves noticing when your attention is lost in thoughts of the past or future, recognizing them as anxieties or stories, and gently letting them go. By returning your awareness to your current sensations, you anchor yourself in the now.
  • What is meant by 'the doorway to the heart'?
This is a metaphor describing the present moment as the only access point to a deeper reality. When you are fully present, you move beyond the constant chatter of the mind and can experience a vast, peaceful awareness that is referred to as 'the heart' or your true nature.
